Industrial city (textiles, chemicals,
electrical goods, jewellery); capital of
Madhya Pradesh, central India; population
(1981) 672,000. Nearby Bhimbetka Caves,
discovered 1973, have the world's largest
collection of prehistoric paintings, which
are about 10,000 years old. In 1984 some
2,000 people died from an escape of poisonous
gas from a factory owned by the US company
Union Carbide; the long-term effects are yet
to be discovered. The city was capital of the
former princely state of Bhopal, founded
1723, which became allied to Britain in 1817.
It was merged with Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
